BA in English Studies

BA in English Studies is a philological study programme at the University of Singidunum in Belgrade, which arose as a response to the growing demands of the modern-day student, as well as those in the domestic and foreign job market. The programme stands out for being accredited in both the Serbian and English language.

The objective of the undergraduate English Study Programme is to enable students to, in addition to gaining scientific, technical, and theoretical-methodological knowledge, acquire practical knowledge and skills. Furthermore, it prepares students for independent work in the fields of English language teaching, translation, and other activities that require a profound understanding of the English language and culture. Moreover, the programme’s aims include capacitating students to further their education at the level of graduate academic studies, as well as for additional specialisation.

Upon completing the study programme, students receive a diploma supplement in two languages: Serbian and English. Graduated students will be able to apply their acquired theoretical and practical knowledge to the fields of English language teaching,translation (literary, technical/specialised, written, interpretation-simultaneous and consecutive), foreign correspondence, and other fields that demonstrate a need for intercultural communication in the English language.

Throughout their studies, students will collaborate directly with their course professors and assistants, test their knowledge practically, have the opportunity to develop their creativity,and foster critical thinking and teamwork.Through interactive lessons and an authentic, humanistic approach, English language studies will enable students to cultivate their linguistic skills and the necessary competences to apply practically to the wide range of activities this study program qualifies them for.

The entrance exam for the Anglistics study programme consists of:

  • Writing a short essay on a selected topic in English,
  • A conversation in English on a particular subject.

Upon filling in the registration online, the candidate will be informed electronically of the approximate topics they should be prepared to discuss for the entrance exam.

Upon successfully completing their studies, students gain the academic title of Bachelor of Arts in Philology.

I year

The course allows students to acquire theoretical and functional knowledge of the English language system; to improve the linguistic and communicative competence of students and developing language skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking in accordance with the principles defined for level B2 (towards C1) of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages; to master translation skills techniques.

The course aims to: introduce the students to the main concepts from the fields of English phonetics and phonology; enable them to acquire the knowledge and skills pertinent to the sound system of English; help students identify sounds in connected speech; help the students develop fluent speech - by applying adequate features of prosody; make them aware of the relevance of prosodic elements in speech, i.e. message interpretation; help the students acquire the elements/phenomena of connected speech.

The aim of the course is to introduce students to the most important historical and cultural periods of Great Britain and the United States, covering their spiritual and political emancipation, their imperial rise to power, and finally their contemporary sociopolitical dynamics in the context of their internal and external conflicts. In addition, the course enables the students to acquire the knowledge of the unique language, cultural and political identities of these countries, which is most faithfully reflected in their legacy of literature which is of profound cultural significance.

The aim of the course is to help students consolidate, systematise and expand knowledge of the Serbian language at all language levels with a special emphasis on practical application and orthographic aspects. Good knowledge and application of theoretical knowledge of the standard Serbian language for easier linguistic contrastive analysis with the English language.

The course enables students to acquire theoretical and functional knowledge of the English language system; to improve the linguistic and communicative competence of students and developing language skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking in accordance with the principles defined for level B2 (towards C1) of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages; to master translation skills techniques.

Introduction to the main concepts related to morphology and word formation; acquisition of both theoretical and practical knowledge pertinent to the field of word structure and word formation; acquisition of knowledge related to word formation and inflectional morphology; acquisition of theoretical concepts related to the most important morphological rules; Mastering the principles, rules and applications of primary and secondary word formation processes; expansion of vocabulary and developing word formation creativity; helping students recognise grammatical and lexical structures of words.

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the fundamental concepts of literature. This will enable them to apply the basic knowledge of literary theory to practical examples in the form of representative literary works. The students will also be introduced to different interpretative approaches to literary works.

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the basics of information technology, hardware and software elementary characteristics in modern computer systems, as well as the phenomenon of networking and the Internet. Students acquire basic computer literacy skills (in terms of operating systems, working with files, using word processing programs and working on the Internet) through practical laboratory exercises. The course also aims at emphasising the importance and place of information technologies in the business environment, teaching, and their role in business process management.

II year

The aim of the course is to help students: improve their grammatical knowledge and develop linguistic competencies; strengthen functional knowledge and develop language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) in accordance with the descriptors defined for level B2 + / C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages; improve their translation skills; develop intercultural competence.

The course aims to: provide a thorough insight into grammatical, i.e. sentence structure on the sample of contemporary English; introduce the students to the main mechanisms and principles of syntax underlying a number of processes that lead to phrase, clause, and sentence formation; enable the students to apply the mechanisms in practice; make the students aware of analysing deep and surface language structure.

The aim of the course is to introduce students to crucial developments in English literature, from the beginning of the first literary works until the latter 20th century. In addition, the students will acquire knowledge of both film and theatrical adaptations of the best-known literary works of art, which will develop their critical thinking skills, especially through the analysis of the key developments of film in its specific relation to the literature on the British continent.

The aim of this course is to enable students to master vocabulary in the field of business English, related to economics (namely marketing, management, human resources), in order to prepare them for courses in interpreting (simultaneous and consecutive), which will be taken later on, during the studies.

The aim of the course is to help students: improve their grammatical knowledge and develop linguistic competency; strengthen functional knowledge and develop language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) in accordance with the descriptors defined for level B2+ / C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages; improve their translation skills; develop intercultural competence.

The aim of the course is to help students: acquire both practical and theoretical knowledge related to the basic semantic concepts; deepen their knowledge of the meaning of individual words and different semantic relationships existing between or among words; enrich vocabulary (academic, professional and everyday); use lexical items in meaningful sentences and contexts; develop skills to recognise the influence of context on meaning.

The aim of the course is to introduce students to crucial developments in American literature, from the beginning of the first literary works until the latter 20th century. In addition, the students will acquire knowledge of both film and theatrical adaptations of the best-known literary works of art, which will develop their critical thinking skills, especially through the analysis of the key developments of film in its specific relation to the literature on the American continent.

The aim of this course is to enable students to master vocabulary in the field of business English, related to human resources and economics (finance and banking, accounting and auditing), in order to prepare them for courses in interpreting (simultaneous and consecutive), which will be taken later on, during the studies.

III year

The course helps students to enhance grammatical and lexical knowledge of noun and verb classes; to strengthen functional knowledge and skills via an integrated approach - development and advancement of language skills of - reading, listening, speaking and writing, in compliance with the CEFR C1 (towards C2) level; to improve written translation skills; to broaden knowledge of Anglophone cultures/peoples/societies.

The aim of this course is to enable students to master vocabulary in the field of ESP (English for Specific Purposes) related to social relations, law, and acquis, in order to prepare them for courses in interpreting (simultaneous and consecutive), which will be taken later on, during the studies, as well as for teaching English for Specific Purposes.

Enhancing grammatical and lexical knowledge of noun and verb classes; Strengthening functional knowledge and skills via an integrated approach - development and advancement of language skills of - reading, listening, speaking and writing, in compliance with the CEFR C1 (towards C2) level; improving written translation skills; broadening horizons related to Anglophone cultures/peoples/societies.

Introducing students to the basic theoretical and practical approaches, methods and techniques necessary for writing lesson plans, organization of teaching materials, and use of teaching aids. Preparing students to independently teach English.

The aim of this course is to enable students to master vocabulary in the field of ESP (English for Specific Purposes) related to tourism and hospitality management with a specific emphasis on medical tourism, in order to prepare them for courses in interpreting (simultaneous and consecutive), which will be taken later on, during the studies as well as for teaching English for Specific Purposes.

The aim of the practicum is to: strengthen students' theoretical knowledge in the field of teaching English as a foreign language; enable students to apply the acquired theoretical knowledge in real situations of English language teaching; enable students to teach English to primary school students; develop students' critical thinking in the analysis of current English language curricula in primary schools.

The aim of the course is to help students: gain knowledge of basic concepts related to the Spanish language and Hispanic literature and culture; use terms in the field of Hispanic culture and make a selection and classification of available information; acquire knowledge of Hispanic culture and develop skills of understanding, analysis and evaluation of other cultures; develop language and communication skills, as well as intercultural competencies.

The aim of the course is to help students: gain knowledge of basic concepts related to the characteristics of cultures and cultural patterns in language and communication; recognize social phenomena that are differently perceived in different cultures; understand prerequisites for successful communication in different linguistic and intercultural contexts; develop communication, sociolinguistic and intercultural competencies.

The aim of the course is to help students acquire knowledge about the historical development of rhetoric and rhetorical skills in the context of contemporary rhetorical publications; encourage students to apply theoretical knowledge and empower them to create an oration; establish individual competencies in the strategies of rhetorical heritage (from the rhetoric of ancient Greece and Rome to modern Serbian rhetorical practice); strengthen individual rhetorical potentials and train students for independent speaking; help students develop speech culture and listening culture (speaking skills, active listening skills).

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the main concepts of sociolinguistics, as well as to define the role that culture and society have within languages, with special reference to the English language.

The aim of the course is to help students: gain basic theoretical and functional knowledge of modern language teaching in a multimodal environment; develop linguistic, communication and digital competencies with the use of multimedia and digital tools in the teaching context; develop successful multimodal learning strategies.

The aim of the course is to help students: gain knowledge of basic theoretical concepts related to the characteristics and forms of communication; strengthen functional and pragmatic competencies by developing their communication skills (both written and oral), comprehension skills (understanding both speech and written text), as well as mediation skills; develop successful communication strategies; develop critical and contextual thinking.

IV year

The aim of the course is to: strengthen and deepen students' knowledge of complex sentence constructions and functions, and forms of lower syntactic units: help students acquire linguistic precision and accuracy in the use of rich grammatical and semantically nuanced lexical repertoire; consolidate receptive and productive skills in accordance with the descriptors defined for level C1 / C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages; deepen knowledge of formal and informal uses of language in written and spoken form; help students acquire knowledge about the use of language in different social and cultural contexts.

The course aims to: familiarize the students with the applicable techniques of simultaneous and consecutive interpreting; activate the previously acquired knowledge and skills from both grammatical and lexical fields; enable them to perform translation/interpreting-related activities independently (related to a number of spheres of human endeavour, e.g. economics - HR, PR, banking, finance, accounting, audit, tourism, hospitality, law, medicine, EU acquis, etc.)

The aim of professional practice is to help students to: expand and apply knowledge in the field of English for specific purposes, business correspondence and written and oral translation in professional activities; apply the acquired theoretical knowledge in real working conditions in organizations and companies where there is a need to use the language for specific purposes, business correspondence and translation; develop critical and creative thinking skills and develop communication skills and competencies of cooperation and teamwork; develop critical thinking skills in concrete tasks in real working conditions in organizations and companies.

The aim of the course is to introduce students to the basic characteristics of a child's mental development and the characteristics of their development at different ages: from birth, childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age in the field of socio-emotional, cognitive and moral development. This course will enable students to acquire the basic concepts in psychology, as well as the knowledge of the basic laws of human behavior, which will help them organize and realize foreign language teaching and learning process more effectively.

The course introduces students to the prominent theories, techniques and procedures in the field of translation. With special reference to the methods for preserving the original stamp of the author, primarily in the field of prose (and poetry for illustrative purposes), the course aims to activate and develop students' skills and knowledge about various branches of linguistics (syntax, morphology, lexicology, phonetics and phonology, etc.), both in Serbian and in English. Developing their skills of literary hermeneutics, students are professionally trained to translate literary and artistic texts as accurately as possible from the original text to the target language.

The aim of the practicum is to: strengthen students' theoretical knowledge in the field of teaching English as a foreign language; enable students to apply the acquired theoretical knowledge in real situations of English language teaching; enable students to teach English to secondary school students; to develop students' critical thinking in the analysis of current English language curricula in secondary schools.

The aim of the course is: to introduce students to the theory and practice of teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) to young learners 3-10 years old; to familiarize students with techniques for teaching vocabulary, and grammar, combined with teaching listening, speaking, reading and writing in a meaningful context.

Guiding students in finding appropriate means for better collaboration with teenage and adult learners; familiarizing them with ideas of how to engage learners to be active participants in various teaching processes; how to use methods, approaches and techniques to teach EFL using age-appropriate activities.

The course aims to: shed some additional light on the native-foreign language correlation; familiarize the students with language surface and deep structures; introduce the students to the relevance of culture and society for languages, as well as mechanisms coming from the micro- and macro-linguistic branches, with specific emphasis paid to the phenomena of language transfer, interlanguage, and the accompanying notions.

The aim of the course is to deepen previously acquired knowledge of the English grammar system; to develop students' skills to recognize different grammatical relationships and applications in authentic linguistic contexts; to develop students' skills of applying acquired language knowledge in real, receptive and productive language circumstances; to help students acquire knowledge about the specifics of descriptive and normative grammar and their applications in different contexts of language use.

The aim of the course is to systematize students' existing knowledge and skills acquired in previous academic years and to introduce them to academic skills, helping them to search for adequate literature, develop critical thinking and the ability to independently write various sections of scientific papers (abstract, summary, critical analysis of scientific work). The aim of the course is to develop students' ability to use independent critical thinking in the process of reading scientific papers, as well as in the process of writing different types of papers in the academic environment.

The aim of the course is: to get students acquainted with the basic characteristics of the old and new media; help students understand how media messages are created and manipulated; improve students’ ability to think critically and evaluate media discourse and develop a responsible attitude toward one's own media messages; encourage students to analyze language and its role in creating media content.
